Hablo, hablas, habla
Spanish grammar, color-keyed.

One rule holds across every chart on this page: each grammatical person owns one color, everywhere. Yo is always carmine, tú is always gold, nosotros is always cobalt. Verb endings are set in bold mono in the person's color; stems stay in ink. On the noun side, masculine is always blue, feminine always red. Learn the key once and every table below reads at a glance.

Persona key yo él · ella · Ud. nosotros/-as vosotros/-as ellos · ellas · Uds.

1Articles

Spanish nouns don't decline by case, but articles and adjectives agree in gender and number — the closest thing Spanish has to declension. The coding here: masculine = cobalt, feminine = carmine, neuter = olive.

Definite article — "the"gender · number
MasculineFeminineNeuter
Singularel librola casalo bueno
Plurallos libroslas casas
Indefinite article — "a / some"gender · number
MasculineFeminine
Singularun librouna casa
Pluralunos librosunas casas
Watch out: feminine nouns beginning with stressed a-/ha- take el/un in the singular but stay feminine: el agua fría → las aguas frías. Contractions are mandatory: a + el = al, de + el = del.

2Adjective agreement

Adjectives take the same four-cell pattern as articles. The colored ending shows what changes.

4Possessives

Rows use the persona colors — the possessor drives the row, the possessed noun drives the ending.

5Personal pronouns — the full "declension"

This is the one place Spanish truly declines: pronouns change form by function (subject → direct object → indirect object → reflexive → after prepositions). Read across a colored row to see one person in all five forms.

Pronoun case chartthe real declension table

1 plnosotros/-asnosnosnosnosotros/-as
2 plvosotros/-asosososvosotros/-as
3 plellos · ellas · Uds.los · lasles (→ se)seellos · ellas · sí
Le → se rule: when an indirect and direct object pronoun stack, le/les becomes se: Se lo di — "I gave it to him," never le lo di. Order is always indirect before direct: me lo, te la, se los…

6Present indicative

The three regular families. Stems in ink, endings in bold mono in the person's color. Column headers carry the class color: -ar orange, -er green, -ir violet.

7Preterite — completed past

ellos / ellas / Uds.hablaroncomieronvivieron
Accent marks matter: hablo = "I speak" (present) but habló = "he spoke" (preterite). The written accent is the only difference.

8Imperfect — ongoing past

The friendliest tense: only three irregular verbs in the whole language (ser, ir, ver). -er and -ir share one set of endings.

9Future & conditional

Both tenses attach endings to the whole infinitive — one ending set each for all three verb classes. Irregulars only change the stem (yellow), never the ending.

The dozen irregular stems (shared by future and conditional): tener→tendr-, poner→pondr-, salir→saldr-, venir→vendr-, poder→podr-, saber→sabr-, querer→querr-, haber→habr-, hacer→har-, decir→dir-, caber→cabr-, valer→valdr-.

10Present subjunctive

The "opposite vowel" tense: -ar verbs take e-endings, -er/-ir verbs take a-endings. Build it from the yo form of the present: drop -o, add the swapped endings.

hablar · comer · vivir-ar → e -er → a -ir → a

yohablecomaviva
hablescomasvivas
él / ella / Ud.hablecomaviva
nosotros/-ashablemoscomamosvivamos
vosotros/-ashabléiscomáisviváis
ellos / ellas / Uds.hablencomanvivan
The yo-form trick: because the base is the present yo form, irregular yo verbs carry their irregularity through: tengo → tenga, conozco → conozca, digo → diga. Six verbs ignore the rule entirely: sea, esté, vaya, haya, sepa, dé.

11Imperative — commands

Affirmative vs. negative — hablarnegative = subjunctive
PersonAffirmative ✓Negative ✗Rule of thumb

nosotros/-as¡hablemos!¡no hablemos!"let's…" — subjunctive
vosotros/-as¡hablad!¡no habléis!aff. = -r → -d
ustedes¡hablen!¡no hablen!always subjunctive
Eight irregular tú commands: di (decir), haz (hacer), ve (ir), pon (poner), sal (salir), sé (ser), ten (tener), ven (venir) — "Vin Diesel has ten weapons" if a mnemonic helps.

12The five verbs you can't avoid

Ser, estar, ir, tener, haber — fully irregular, fully essential. Present tense side by side; yellow flags mark the wildest forms.

13Compound tenses — one formula

Every perfect tense is just haber (conjugated) + past participle. The participle never changes: -ar → -ado, -er/-ir → -ido.
