Being, Motion, Time
A fourth vantage on the same old questions — this time from thinkers who trusted logic and language, more than intuition or geometry, to settle what exists. None of these four is, strictly, a "logical positivist" — that label belongs to the Vienna Circle. But Russell supplied the logical toolkit, Wittgenstein's early work directly inspired the Circle's program, Quine dismantled its central dogmas from within analytic philosophy, and Whitehead — Russell's own collaborator on the foundations of mathematics — took the logic in the opposite direction entirely, toward a philosophy of process. Together they form the logic-and-language axis of this whole series.
Continuing the Question
This is the third companion piece to On Time, following the guide on Continental Rationalism. Where Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz reasoned about being, motion, and time through metaphysical system-building, the four thinkers here share a conviction that careful attention to logic and language — rather than intuited first principles — is the right tool for the job. That conviction produced sharply different results.
A word on the label in this guide's own title: Russell, Wittgenstein, Quine, and Whitehead are not, strictly speaking, four logical positivists. That term names a specific group, the Vienna Circle (Schlick, Carnap, Neurath, and others), who built a philosophy of science around a verifiability criterion of meaning. But the four figures gathered here sit in direct, documented relation to that movement and to each other: Russell's logical atomism supplied much of its technical apparatus; Wittgenstein's Tractatus was read by the Circle as its founding scripture (somewhat against Wittgenstein's own intentions); Quine, trained in that tradition, dismantled its central distinctions while preserving its naturalism; and Whitehead — Russell's co-author on the very foundations of mathematics — took the shared logical toolkit and built something closer to Leibniz than to Vienna: a philosophy of process. Reading all four together traces the logic-and-language axis of twentieth-century philosophy's encounter with being, motion, and time.
Being — Logical AtomismThe World as Atomic Facts
Bertrand Russell's logical atomism (developed across the 1900s–1910s, and set out most fully in his 1918 lectures) holds that the world decomposes into logically independent atomic facts — the simplest possible states of affairs, each corresponding to an atomic proposition that simply asserts it. Complex facts and complex propositions are built out of these atoms using logical connectives ("and," "or," "not"). The task of philosophy, on this picture, is logical analysis: taking the messy, misleading grammar of ordinary sentences and revealing the true logical structure hiding underneath.
Russell's most celebrated piece of analysis is the Theory of Descriptions, from his 1905 paper "On Denoting." The sentence "The present King of France is bald" looks, grammatically, exactly like "Napoleon is bald" — a subject term picking out an individual, of which something is predicated. But there is no present King of France, so what does the sentence refer to? Russell's answer: definite descriptions are not referring terms at all, but disguised existential claims. "The present King of France is bald" really says: there exists an x that is King of France, only one such x exists, and that x is bald. Since no such x exists, the sentence comes out straightforwardly false — not meaningless, not mysteriously about a shadowy non-existent king — dissolving a puzzle that had troubled logicians for centuries.
Motion — The At-At Theory
Russell's account of motion, introduced in the earlier guide on Zeno, follows naturally from logical atomism. If the world is a collection of atomic facts about what holds at each point of space and time, then there is no need — and no room — for some further fact of "moving" over and above a series of such point-facts. Motion, Russell argued, simply is being at different positions at different times: the "at-at" theory. There is no additional ingredient, no hidden inner activity of "moving," occurring within or between instants. Position, understood as a mathematical function of time, is the whole story — which is exactly what dissolves Zeno's Arrow: the arrow's being at a single point at a single instant was never in competition with its moving, because moving just is occupying a continuum of such points across a continuum of instants.
Time — The B-SeriesAgainst McTaggart's Unreality of Time
Russell's Cambridge colleague J. M. E. McTaggart argued, in his 1908 paper "The Unreality of Time," that time itself does not exist. McTaggart distinguishes two ways of ordering events: the A-series — ordering events as past, present, or future, a tensed ordering that constantly shifts as "now" moves forward — and the B-series — ordering events merely as earlier-than or later-than one another, a fixed, tenseless ordering that never changes. McTaggart argued that genuine change requires the A-series, yet the A-series is contradictory: every event must be future, then present, then past — three incompatible determinations true of the very same event — and any attempt to soften this ("it is future, then later present, then later still past") smuggles in the very temporal notions supposedly being explained, generating an infinite regress. His conclusion: time, understood as requiring the incoherent A-series, is unreal.
Russell's reply — keep the B-series, drop the tense
Russell and most subsequent philosophers of time responded that McTaggart's argument, at most, shows the A-series (tensed becoming) to be incoherent — it does not show that the B-series (fixed relations of earlier/later/simultaneous) is unreal. On this view, often called the B-theory of time, reality is a single four-dimensional manifold of events standing in fixed earlier-than/later-than relations — a "block universe" in which past, present, and future are all equally real, and the felt "flow" of time or the specialness of "now" is a fact about conscious perspective within the block, not a fact about the block itself.
Being — The TractatusAtomic Facts and the Picture Theory
Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921) opens with one of philosophy's most famous first lines: "Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist" — "the world is everything that is the case." The world, for the early Wittgenstein, is the totality of facts, not of things — a decisively Russellian starting point. Facts decompose into elementary states of affairs (Sachverhalte), themselves combinations of simple objects. Meaningful propositions are pictures of possible facts: a proposition shares a logical form with the fact it depicts, and is true just when the picture matches how things actually stand.
This "picture theory" sets a hard boundary on what can be meaningfully said at all: only propositions that picture possible facts make sense. Ethics, aesthetics, the meaning of life, and metaphysics itself — including, awkwardly, much of the Tractatus's own content — fall outside that boundary, in the realm of the "mystical," which can be shown but not said. The book's famous closing line draws the boundary explicitly: "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent."
An inspiration the Vienna Circle half-understood
The Vienna Circle's logical positivists took the Tractatus as scripture for their own verifiability criterion of meaning — a statement is meaningful only if empirically verifiable or true by logic alone, everything else is nonsense. Wittgenstein reportedly felt they had missed his real point: the Tractatus's silence about ethics and the mystical was meant to protect their importance from the corrosion of loose talk, not to dismiss them as worthless.
The Turn — Language Games
By the time of the posthumously published Philosophical Investigations (1953), Wittgenstein had abandoned nearly everything distinctive about the Tractatus. Meaning is no longer a matter of picturing facts, but of use within a Sprachspiel — a "language game" embedded in a shared "form of life." Words like "game," "time," or "understanding" do not answer to some single essence awaiting logical analysis; their meaning is scattered across a family of overlapping, related uses, learned through practice rather than definition.
Philosophical problems, on this later view, typically arise when language "goes on holiday" — when a word is wrenched out of the ordinary practice that gives it sense and made to answer metaphysical questions it was never suited to answer. The job of philosophy is not to build systems (atomist or otherwise) but to dissolve these confusions by patiently describing how the relevant words actually function.
Time — Dissolving the Puzzle
Wittgenstein never built a rival theory of time to set beside Plato's, Husserl's, or Russell's. His method suggests something more deflationary. Recall Augustine's anguished confession, quoted in the earlier guide on Plato, Husserl, and Heidegger: he knows what time is until asked to explain it, and then finds he does not know. Wittgenstein's diagnosis of puzzlement of exactly this shape is that it arises from treating "time" as though it must name some hidden object or substance we should be able to inspect directly — as though the word worked like the name of a strange, elusive thing, rather than functioning perfectly well within ordinary practices: reading clocks, keeping appointments, saying "wait a moment."
On this view, the anguish is not a discovery about time's mysterious nature; it is a symptom of grammar misapplied — of expecting language about time to behave like language about objects, and then recoiling in bewilderment when it does not. The puzzle is not solved by a better metaphysical theory, Tractarian or otherwise, but dissolved by looking closely at how "time"-talk actually works.
Being — Ontological CommitmentThe Web of Belief
W. V. O. Quine's 1948 paper "On What There Is" gives analytic philosophy its most quoted one-liner on the question of existence: "to be is to be the value of a bound variable." A theory's ontology — what it says exists — is not fixed by intuition or grammar, but by what its variables must range over for the theory's own sentences, properly regimented in logical notation, to come out true. Disputes about whether numbers, properties, or possible objects exist should be settled by examining our best overall theory, not by pre-theoretical hunches.
Quine's 1951 paper "Two Dogmas of Empiricism" then turned this same rigor against logical positivism itself, attacking two of its foundation stones: the analytic/synthetic distinction (the idea that some truths hold by meaning alone, independent of fact) and reductionism (the idea that each meaningful statement can be individually verified against sense experience). Quine argued instead for holism: statements face the "tribunal of experience" not one by one, but as a connected web of belief, with logic and mathematics at the well-protected core and empirical claims nearer the revisable periphery — but nothing, in principle, immune from revision. This dismantled positivism's cleanest distinctions while keeping its core empiricism and scientific naturalism intact.
Motion and Time — Four Dimensions
Quine's naturalism, taking contemporary physics at face value, extends Russell's B-theoretic instincts a step further. He argued that physical objects are best understood not as three-dimensional things that persist wholly present through time, but as four-dimensional space-time "worms" — extended in time exactly as they are extended in space, possessing temporal parts just as they possess spatial parts. An object's history, on this four-dimensionalist picture, is simply its full extent along the time axis; "now" is an indexical, perspectival label — like "here" — with no more metaphysical privilege than any other moment in the four-dimensional block.
A Parmenidean echo, arrived at from physics
Quine reaches, via naturalized epistemology and relativity physics rather than metaphysical intuition, a picture strikingly reminiscent of the oldest view in this whole series: Parmenides' single, unchanging, undivided "What Is," which Zeno's paradoxes were built to defend. The four-dimensional block universe and the Eleatic One are different in almost every detail, but share a family resemblance — a denial that "becoming" adds any real, fundamental structure beyond a single, complete, tenseless totality.
Being — Actual OccasionsThe Philosophy of Organism
Alfred North Whitehead co-authored, with Russell, the monumental Principia Mathematica (1910–13) — then took twentieth-century philosophy in the opposite direction from his collaborator. In Process and Reality (1929), Whitehead argues that the final, real constituents of the universe are not enduring substances, nor static atomic facts, but momentary actual occasions (or "actual entities") — drops of experience that come into being through a process Whitehead calls concrescence, "growing together": each occasion actively synthesizes, or prehends, the data offered by all relevant prior occasions into one novel, unified "satisfaction." Once complete, the occasion perishes — becoming "objectively immortal," available as data for future occasions to prehend in turn — and a new occasion begins.

Whitehead deliberately generalizes "prehension" beyond anything narrowly mental — even the simplest physical events, on his "philosophy of organism," involve a primitive form of taking-account-of prior occasions, dissolving the old sharp line between mind and matter far more thoroughly than Spinoza's parallelism, by making something experience-like the basic unit of reality throughout nature.
Motion — Societies of Occasions
If the ultimate units of reality are momentary occasions that arise and perish, what happens to the ordinary idea of a persisting thing moving through space? Whitehead's answer: what we call an enduring object — a person, an electron, a stone — is really a society of many successive actual occasions, each inheriting and continuing a defining pattern from its predecessors. "Motion" and "endurance" are not properties of one substance that stays the same while changing location, but names for a serially-ordered pattern running through a whole succession of distinct, momentary occasions — a picture closer to a river's ever-renewed flow than to a billiard ball sliding across a table.
Time — The Epochal TheoryA Direct Answer to Zeno
Whitehead engages Zeno's paradoxes directly, and offers his own resolution: the epochal theory of time. The mistake in the Dichotomy and Achilles, on this view, is to assume that the very process of becoming is itself infinitely divisible — that a thing must complete infinitely many sub-stages of coming-to-be before it can finish becoming at all. Whitehead denies this. Each actual occasion becomes as an indivisible whole, a single "epoch" or drop of experience, all at once — not by first assembling infinitely many smaller acts of becoming. Once an occasion has fully become, the resulting completed occasion can indeed be analyzed, after the fact, as occupying a divisible stretch of time. But the becoming itself, while it is happening, is not built up out of smaller becomings.
Whitehead's own summary of the idea is a compact paradox in its own right: there is a becoming of continuity, but no continuity of becoming. The finished world of occasions forms a genuine, divisible continuum — but no single occasion's act of becoming is itself divided into sub-acts, so Zeno's infinite regress of sub-tasks never gets started in the first place.
